Summary

Radha is on the verge of becoming one of the greatest Kathak dancers in the world 。 。 。 until a family betrayal costs her the biggest competition of her life。 Now, she has left her Chicago home behind to follow her stage mom to New Jersey。 At the Princeton Academy of the Arts, Radha is determined to leave performing in her past, and reinvent herself from scratch。

Jai is captain of the Bollywood Beats dance team, ranked first in his class, and an overachiever with no college plans。 Tight family funds means medical school is a pipe dream, which is why he wants to make the most out of high school。 When Radha enters his life, he realizes she's the exact ingredient he needs for a show-stopping senior year。

With careful choreography, both Radha and Jai will need to face their fears (and their families) if they want a taste of a happily ever after。

I really enjoyed this book。 Each main character had a complicated home/family situation which I think added to the story in a really authentic way。 The characters felt real to me and I really empathized with their struggles, especially Radha's mental health concerns (CW: anxiety, panic attacks)。 Nisha Sharma very clearly knew what she was talking about in this book and dealt with it in a loving and honest way。 Plus you get recipes, who doesn't love a food book? The dance competition for money trope was very popular when I was growing up and I'm happy to write that Sharma gets it just right。 She included enough detail for me to picture the dance scenes as well as the cooking ones。 The recipes passed down from Radha's grandpa are wonderfully placed throughout the book and I love how they connect to Radha's experiences。 Sharma did not write this book with non-Indian folx front and center, so the dishes and references are not watered down for us。 We must l The dance competition for money trope was very popular when I was growing up and I'm happy to write that Sharma gets it just right。 She included enough detail for me to picture the dance scenes as well as the cooking ones。 The recipes passed down from Radha's grandpa are wonderfully placed throughout the book and I love how they connect to Radha's experiences。 Sharma did not write this book with non-Indian folx front and center, so the dishes and references are not watered down for us。 We must look up the terminology along the way and I liked that。 I got to learn more about other cultures and enjoy the content of the story even more。 Jai and Radha make a very sweet couple。 They reminded me of how big every disagreement felt when I was a teen。 It felt like all or nothing and sometimes I forget that。 This also included the classic problems that teens from immigrant and/or competitive families deal with: feeling like they always have to help and believing that they will never be good enough。 Now that I'm an adult, this makes me frustrated but I remember feeling the same way! Radha & Jai's Recipe for Romance managed to be sweet, enriching, silly, and a bit sad all at the same time。 I recommend readers also listen to the audiobook if they are not familiar with the pronunciation of names, dishes, dances, etc。 It's very helpful and the narrator, Mayuri Bhandari, has the perfect voice for it。 Verdict:Radha & Jai's Recipe for Romance is an awesome book for folks who want a sweet romance book with flare。 Folx who prefer their romances without sex scenes will love this。 。。。more

Wow! Wow!Okay, I have to admit, I was extremely skeptical going into this book。 I love romcoms, but YA romcoms can be extremely cheesy and I wasn't sure if I could handle that。 Or if I would be able to relate。BUT BOY WAS I WRONG!Radha and Jai's Recipe for romance is far from cheesy and a story many can relate to。 The themes of the story range from family ties, to blossoming love, and overcoming personal fears, even if you are the one standing in your own way。 This story was beautiful and so fun Wow! No, of course not。 Which is why it worked。 Both Jai and Radha were keeping secrets from one another, or at least not giving the whole truth。 They had this image of the other built up, but realized that the only way to truly know a person is actually talking and having a conversation。 The discord in this book is fantastically written and healthy。 I love seeing that in a YA book。I also just loved the dancing and recipes this book had! The dancing sounded beautiful and the food seemed delicious。 I appreciated the complicated relationship between Radha and her mother。 It is something many people can relate to。 Even though I hated Radha's mother when she slapped her and felt as if there could have been more to resolve that big issue in the book, I still liked watching their relationship。Such a fun and cute read! 。。。more

I loved Radha, and connected with her instantly。 I grew up a competitive dancer myself, and was brought back into the high stakes world of competition with Radha。 Watching Radha grapple with her anxiety was one of the best parts of this book。 Radha’s healing was not linear – she had good and bad days, her “dance joy” came and went, as it would in real life。 It made her journey feel so much more real。 I also loved the emphasis the story had on family。 Jai had a wonderful biological family and found family to which he was unfailingly loyal。 Radha was able to form connections with her father and cousin that she had never been able to due to her packed dance schedule。 Radha and Jai’s relationship was so cute and fun, and was one of the healthiest relationships I’ve had the pleasure of reading。 Watching them learn, grow, and support each other was so fun and refreshing。 Overall, Sharma has created a wonderful story about family, culture, and overcoming fears for a better future。 Content Warnings: Divorced parents, infidelity, strong language, anxiety, panic attacks, familial medical emergenciesFollow us on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook @pinereadsreview and check out our website at www。pinereadsreview。com for reviews, author interviews, blogs, podcast episodes, and more! 。。。more

I debated between a 4 and 5 for this book。 It is very well written with great character with real(istic) problems。 This is a great book。 The food and dancing and forces pulling the characters toward and away from each other are explored well。 The drawback is that I didn't get much of a sense of happiness and joy around Jai & Radha's love story。 There are scenes were they spend time together and kiss and romance each other but I just didn't feel much chemistry between them。I still would recommend I debated between a 4 and 5 for this book。 It is very well written with great character with real(istic) problems。 This is a great book。 The food and dancing and forces pulling the characters toward and away from each other are explored well。 The drawback is that I didn't get much of a sense of happiness and joy around Jai & Radha's love story。 There are scenes were they spend time together and kiss and romance each other but I just didn't feel much chemistry between them。I still would recommend this story for the depth of character and culture portrayed。 I think it is especially great if you read My so called bollywood life because the two together really give a wide variety of individual Indian & Indian Americans, their cultures and concerns。Nisha always portrays Indian cultures as fluid, varied towards families and individuals。 An example of that is how different & individual the mom are in each of her YA books。 Her characters have interest both centered around their Indian identity and their USA identity (I am not sure if the correct word for this is identity or culture or something else)。 。。。more

Definitely recommend it to all those who love cheesy Bollywood romance! 。。。more

I fell in love with YA fiction over the past year, and more so, over the perfect characters that had been created by such talented writers。 However, I'd never found a book that contained some desi representation and this book does just that。 Apart from the names of the characters, it includes the Indian values that I and so many other desi kids are more than familiar with, a love for Bollywood that I enjoyed thoroughly, and most importantly, recipes for Indian food that I'm now dying to try out。 I fell in love with YA fiction over the past year, and more so, over the perfect characters that had been created by such talented writers。 However, I'd never found a book that contained some desi representation and this book does just that。 Apart from the names of the characters, it includes the Indian values that I and so many other desi kids are more than familiar with, a love for Bollywood that I enjoyed thoroughly, and most importantly, recipes for Indian food that I'm now dying to try out。 From the Bollywood dancing, to cooking, to laughing at some of the stereotypical Indian parent statements, I absolutely love the characters, their fierceness, and their honesty。 Living vicariously through Radha in the 230 pages of this book was an absolute joy :) 。。。more
